Magnetic Make-up Board (Tutuorial)

Hey everyone, I was thinking the other day that I read all of these blogs with tutorials and I should share some of the things that I make. So here is the first of hopefully many fun tutorials for everyone.

Magnetic Make-up Board
I joined Pinterest back about 10 months ago and the very first thing I pinned was this  make-up board tutorial by Laura at the Laura Thoughts blog. I loved the inventive idea of storing make-up without the messy drawers or bins. I knew I wanted to make one for myself, but never found the time. So here, 10 long months later, it is!

Materials:
Metal sheet
Magnets
Zots
Decoupage Glue
Picture Frame
Fabric or Scrapbook Paper

First I went to Home Depot (I live in Georgia and they are headquartered here so they're everywhere!) and found a galvanized sheet of steal. It cost a whopping $5.98, while I was there grabbed some magnets in 2 different sizes.
I already had the zots, and homemade decoupage glue, so I ran over to Michael's (my favorite craft store) and grabbed a picture frame and cute scrapbook paper.
Total I think spent around $20 for the entire project, which in the trade for my sanity I think it was a good trade off.

1.So for the first step I took out the glass from the frame and inserted the metal sheet (I bought my metal cut to shape of 12" x 12" so i just bought a frame to match and this is the cheapest one I found. You can but the metal in other sizes and then use sheers to cut to shape, and use any frame you would like, just make sure the metal will attract magnets.).

2. Next add the decoupage glue to the back of the scrapbook paper. If you want to use fabric you can use spray adhesive to attach it. To make homemade decoupage glue (Mod Podge) add 1 bottle of white Elmer's glue and the same amount of water and shake forever until it is all mixed.

3. Place it on the frame and then I used a wooden spatula to smooth out any air bubbles.

 4. Once the first layer is dry apply 1-3 more coats of decoupage glue.

5. Now that your board is done lets work on the make-up. Apply a "zot" (I use the 3D ones) to each compact and put a magnet on top. If you don't know what Zots are, they are little sticky glue dots that you can buy in any scrapbook section. These are a great option because you can remove the magnet once the make-up is all gone. You could also use super glue, but would have to buy new magnets for new make-up.

 6. Once you have added magnets to all of your make-up hang your board on the wall and TADA, you have a magnetic make-up board.

A few notes about the project: I originally tried to spray paint the scrapbook paper to make it water resistant and last longer, but it didn't work as well as I thought (you can see the spray paint in my "materials" picture cause I didn't take a new one after I changed my mind). Also I wanted to be able to change the background so I added the paper with the Zots,  but it made the paper bubbly and didn't look like I wanted to, so I decided to Decoupage it. Over all it ended up working out better, and the layers of glue will help to make it water resistant. If I ever want to change the background I will just decoupage a new piece on top of this one.

***This was not my original design. The credit goes to Laura at Laura Thoughts. I did however make this one on my own.
